FAQ's: Southern Tandem Rally 2008 STR2008 Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Will there an STR Post Tour this year? A. Yes, Pat and Jack Deacon have put together a terrific 4 –day route through Central Kentucky. The post tour is a loop ride that starts at Mammoth Cave National Park on the Monday following the STR weekend. Pat and Jack will transport your luggage from hotel to hotel and will provide limited road support.
Q. What is the cost for the Post Tour? A. No registration fee! All food and lodging is on your own, but Jack and Pat are not charging anything for their services in setting up the routes and carrying the luggage. However, the number of teams is limited by the amount of “stuff” that Jack and Pat can carry. If you are interested, please contact the Deacons as soon as possible.
Q. Are the number of teams for the STR2008 limited? A. Yes, in keeping with the traditions of the Southern Tandem Rally, we have limited registration to 125 teams. One of the tenets of STR is to maintain the openness and intimacy that a smaller ride brings.
Q. Can I get a refund if I am unable to attend the rally? A. We will refund your registration up to Aug 30th, 2008, less a $20 handling fee. Just contact Kent and Anne if there is an issue.
Q. What is the terrain really like? (I know what I mean when I say gently rolling, what do you mean when you say gently rolling.) A. We do not have mountains in South Central Kentucky! In general, the routes for this rally do have flat to gently rolling terrain. Friday’s routes to Mammoth Cave Park have 2 or 3 challenging uphills; not particularly steep, but they do go on a ways. Saturday’s routes are in the flattest areas around Bowling Green. If you do the long option, you’ll find some challenging hills, but the 50 mile route is fairly flat. Sunday’s routes are a bit more rolling, but do not have any big uphills.
Q. Will you provide SAG support for the ride? A. We will provide SAG stops and limited road support on Saturday and Sunday.
Q. Are there other options for lodging besides the host hotel? A. Our host hotel, Hampton Inn, has blocked off 130 rooms for our rally, however, we realize that some participants may have requirements not met by the host hotel. Bowling Green is a hotbed of convention activity, consequently, there are a number of hotels and bed and breakfasts in the area. We recommend contacting the Bowling Green Visitors’s Center for the best information on alternate lodging.
Q. Can children attend the rally? A. Absolutely! We love to see the kids out on the bikes. We have provided pricing for children based on their age. We’d love to make it all free, but, geez, those kids can eat. 12 and older - $75; 5 to 12 - $50; under 5 is free.
A. Only if you are attending with other family members on a tandem. Even though we all love all kinds of cycling and bicyclists, this is a TANDEM event. In order to ensure that our resources are focused on our Tandem guests, we must restrict other types of cyclists.
Q. Can I get a vegetarian meal? A. Our caterers will be able to provide vegetarian meals as requested for lunch and dinner on Saturday. Please indicate the number of vegetarian meals required on the registration form.
Q. How about T-Shirts for the ride? A. We will not provide T-Shirts for this event, however, each team will receive a special STR’08 gift (or two) in their registration packet.
A. No problem taking your bikes to the room at the Host Hotel.
